Column
Column is a kind of process equipment widely used in chemical, petrochemical, refining and other industries, and mainly used to realize the mass and heat transfer process between gas-liquid or liquid-liquid. The following is a detailed introduction of the column:
I. Structure Composition
The column is usually composed of the following parts:
- Barrel: the main part of column, usually is a cylindrical welded structure, used to accommodate the two-phase of gas-liquid.
- Head (or cap): sealing parts located at the top and bottom of the column, used for column sealing.
- Support: used to support the column, common type is skirt-type.
- Column internals: including liquid distributor, packing support device, gas distributor, defoamer, etc., used to optimize the gas-liquid contact and separation effect.
II Classification
Column can be divided into two categories according to the structure:
- Platular column: gas-liquid contact is realized through the column plates, and the common ones are sieve plate column, floating valve column, blister column and so on. It is characterized by a larger processing capacity, good operational flexibility, but the structure is relatively complex.
- Packing column: the packing as a gas-liquid contact element, commonly found in irregular packing column and regular packing column. Its advantages are small pressure drop, high separation efficiency, but requiring higer liquid load.
III Main Functions & Applications
Column can complete a variety of chemical unit operations:
- Distillation: for the separation of liquid mixtures, such as in petroleum refining to separate hydrocarbons with different boiling points.
- Absorption: used for gas purification or separation, such as the absorption of harmful gases in the exhaust gas treatment.
- Desorption: Used to re-release absorbed gases.
- Extraction: used for liquid-liquid separation, such as in chemical production to separate the organic and aqueous phases.
IV Material
Column material is selected according to the process requirements and media characteristics, common to see as below:
- Carbon steel: suitable for ordinary medium at room temperature or medium temperature.
- Stainless steel: strong corrosion resistance, suitable for acid and alkali and other corrosive media.
- Alloy materials: such as titanium alloy, nickel-based alloys, etc., for high temperature, high pressure or strong corrosive environment.
